What is Scalp Micro Pigmentation (SMP)?
SMP is a non invasive, non surgical treatment for men and women. SMP is a highly detailed process that creates an incredibly natural looking simulation of micro hairs. It’s the art of implanting organic pigment into the scalp with a digital machine. A specialized micro needle allows for precise replication of hair follicles creating the appearance of density and thickness. With proper after care SMP can last many years. SMP is a great solution for anyone dealing with hair loss, whether it’s thinning hair, alopecia, baldness, or scalp scarring. SMP can enhance the results of hair transplants. SMP provides instant results with no downtime. SMP is the ultimate modern solution for hair loss.
Does SMP look natural?
SMP is a very intricate procedure, and in the skilled hands of an experienced makeup artist, it creates an effect that is impeccably subtle and indiscernible. Pigments are carefully selected and blended to work with skin tone and hair colour to achieve the highest level of realism with undetectable results.
Benefits of SMP
Realistic & natural looking
One of the most affordable hair loss strategies and has definite results
Low to no maintenance
Safe treatment – no incisions, no chemicals
Tangible & immediate results, unlike other treatment procedures
Works very well in conjunction with surgical hair restoration
Hair transplants have a supply/demand challenge. The demand for hair is proportionate to the size of the balding area. For many men and women, the supply falls short of the demand. In men with more advanced balding patterns, the supply of donor hair is particularly challenging.
SMP creates fuller looking hair even when hair density is low. Combining SMP with hair transplant surgery means patients can achieve their hair restoration goals in less time and at less cost.
SMP is an ideal treatment for thinning hair in men and women. Hair transplants aren’t great for treating thinning hair as the donor areas are less than ideal as a source of transplanted hair.
SMP decreases the contrast between the hair and scalp in thinning hair making the hair look fuller.
Want a stronger Hair Line?
When SMP is utilized in the hairline, the part and the temple, the improvement in the appearance of density and thickness is remarkable.
Have scars you want covered?
Whether from a head injury, a hair transplant, or any other cause, SMP is highly effective at camouflaging all kinds of scalp scars.
Suffer from Alopecia?
SMP can fill in hair loss patches as they start and continue treatment as needed. Imagine the subtle effect of a closely shaved look on a formerly bald head. The
impact of SMP is truly amazing and immediate; and that instantly results in a more confident you. You can trust that your treatment will stand up to the close up scrutiny from the most critical eye.

What to expect at your complimentary
no obligation consultation
Your consultation gives us an opportunity to meet and discuss the results you hope to achieve from SMP. It gives us a chance to evaluate your current situation up close. We’ll explain the process in detail and answer any questions or concerns you may have.
What you can expect the day of your first procedure
It’s really important to wash your hair the day of your procedure as you will not be able to get the area wet (this includes sweating) for seven days after your appointment. We will give you a shower cap so you can keep dry in the shower. Although not necessary, some clients will shave their heads or get a new hair style before they come in. Even though you’ve washed your hair, the area being treated will be thoroughly cleansed.
The next step is to map out the new hairline or area being treated. This is a critical step and we will take the time it takes to ensure that you are 100% happy with placement.
A topical numbing agent is applied to ensure your comfort during the process. While we wait for the numbing cream to take effect, your custom pigment will be mixed. Then we get to work, stippling individual micro dots on your scalp.
The first procedure builds the foundation for the area(s) being treated. You’ll be able see an immediate result. Each subsequent session builds the density within the area being treated.
Each treatment typically takes two to three hours, but don’t worry, we’ll take a seventh inning stretch.
Immediately after your treatment, you may have some redness or swelling and the sensation of a minor sunburn. This should subside within a day. That’s it. You’re pretty much ready to resume your regular activities, with a couple of the following exceptions:
Avoid hot showers, swimming, saunas, and hot tubs between appointments and avoid them for 30 days after your final appointment.
Avoid putting any lotions or creams on the treated area other than what is included in your care package.
Keep the treated area out of the sun in between appointments and for 30 days after your final appointment. Wear 30-50 SPF sunscreen thereafter.
Avoid shaving the scalp for at least a week after your appointment.
Avoid heavy exercise for five days after your treatments.
What to do while your SMP procedure is healing
The results and longevity of your treatment will depend on how well you take care of your scalp during the healing process and beyond. For the first week the treated area will appear bolder and darker that what the end result will be. There may be some minimal scabbing. Don’t pick the scabs. Let them fall off on their own. Be
patient, it takes approximately 6 – 8 weeks for the procedure to fully heal. Once the area is fully healed the true colour will have settled and you’ll be able to fully appreciate the result. Don’t forget the sunscreen and wear a hat during prolonged sun exposure. Any adjustments or touchups, will be done 8 weeks after your final appointment.
Following our recommendations is extremely important for the
success of your procedure
SMP is a customized treatment and your ultimate solution for disguising your hair loss will be unique. Every treatment is bespoke, designed for your particular needs. The cost of each procedure will vary based on several factors, including the size of the treatment area, the size of the head, density required, density of existing hair, skin type and whether or not scars need to be concealed. Pricing for those suffering from mild Alopecia to severe Alopecia will be determined by the size of head, the size of the treatment area and the extent of hair loss. A few factors that affect the price of SMP, are:
We utilize the long established and accepted measure of male and female hair loss – the Northwood Hamilton Scale for men and the Ludwig Scale for women (as shown below) as a our guideline for determining area coverage. The number of treatments will depend on the amount of scalp coverage required.
Skin Type and Skin Condition
Those with dry, flaky skin, acne, moles, damaged skin, older skin or highly sensitive skin require more time and extra care in application. The SMP process takes longer with thicker skin as more pressure is required to penetrate the layers of skin, whereas thinner skin requires less pressure allowing for a quicker hand motion which shortens treatment time.
Concealing scars with SMP requires precision in the placement of pigment to ensure seamless coverage. It’s an intricate detailed process. Some types of scars are more challenging to conceal than others due to skin discolouration, age of the scar, and the way they have healed. Not all scars are suitable for SMP camouflage.
Hair density can vary from person to person and the correct density is critical for the most natural appearance. The more density required or requested affects the cost of SMP
